Designing High-Performance, Healthy Schools

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design has become a household name in real estate, design and building circles. Another “best practices” program for school design, which is less widely used but gaining traction in the industry, is Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS).
CHPS is a national movement to improve student performance and the entire educational experience by building the best possible schools. The goal of CHPS is to “fundamentally change the design, construction and operation of schools to: protect student and staff health, and enhance the  learning environments of school children everywhere; conserve energy, water, and other natural  resources and reduce waste, pollution, and environmental degradation.”
We have been working with CHPS for seven years and truly see the value in an alternative rating system that helps school districts and the project teams design, construct and operate high performance schools.

New Spaces Should Change How We Work, Not Just Where

When designing the Bunting Endoscopy Center at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, Md., Hord Coplan Macht challenged not only how the space worked, but also how hospital staff worked within it. From maximizing patient privacy and infection control to challenging workflow and aesthetics, HCM used feedback from nurses, doctors, support staff, and patients to create an elegant design with a fresh and insightful perspective into the work and workflow itself.

Meaningful Student Engagement

At Hord Coplan Macht, we believe that every school project provides an opportunity to support and enhance the learning that happens within the facility. While it is common in the industry to look for ways that allow the finished building to function as a teaching tool, we have expanded the way we look at the concept by using the word “building” as a verb – to use the actual design and building process as a teaching and learning tool.

Case Study: Western State University Samuel Quigley Hall, John and Georgie Kincaid Concert Hall

Samuel Quigley Hall on the Western State Colorado University Campus sits facing the “W” on Tenderfoot Mountain in Gunnison, Colorado. This building was originally built in the late 1960s to house programs for music and art and was updated and improved in 2016.

Design Tools for Daylight Cover

Design Tools for Daylight is a comparative research analysis of the daylight tools available to designers using a case study of a recently completed school.  It will compare the school’s daylight results from calculations, architectural modeling, and energy modeling, to each other as well as to the actual light measurements.

This comprehensive research project is being presented at the 2016 National American Institute of Architects Convention.

Learning Space Design for the Ethnically Diverse Undergraduate Classroom

The purpose of this study by James Determan, FAIA and a team of contributors is to examine to what extent the physical learning space design contributes to enhanced learning outcomes in an undergraduate, active learning class of ethnically diverse students. The study presents findings of data collected from two classrooms, where the course content, instructor, pedagogy and diverse student demographic characteristics are held constant, but the learning space design of each space varies- one is a traditional, desks in rows, classroom and the other is an active learning, technology enhanced classroom. Data was collected by monitoring student activity via videotaped analysis of behavioral characteristics in the classroom and mapped to student performance; also by student surveys, focus group interviews and instructor interviews.

Design Strategies for Podium and Wrapper Buildings

Hord Coplan Macht recognizes and has responded to our client’s desires to create high density, multi-family projects that harmonizes into the urban context. Very often the project’s viability requires the integration of mixed uses all within a single building. Aside from residential, these uses often include retail, restaurant, office and structured parking. A cost effective means to achieve this is through podium and wrapper buildings. We originally published this white paper in 2011 and have updated it annually to keep up with changes in the building codes and trends in multifamily development. This current edition was published in Summer 2015.

Lean Design

Lean trained planners to assist in the analysis and redesign of future work flow for patients, staff and visitors.

Capacity Modeling

Working with historical and/or future market growth, develop capacity models to show facility need. This is an interactive program that allows the user to create ‘what if’ situations

Discrete Event Simulation is used to graphically show the capacity model, efficiencies and inefficiencies of care models, processes, workflows, etc.

Facility Modeling

Using the facility need developed by a Capacity Modeler a facility program can be developed based on real data not ‘gut feeling’

3D Animations – Ability to walk through a space by using computer generated images. This 3D animation assists in identifying potential work flow/operational issues
